We all live with potential triggers, but fireworks are a special kind of trigger – the sound, flash, shockwave, and unpredictability can drag the brain straight back to places we don’t want to go.
It’s not that they “sound like war.” It’s that they recreate an environment that pulls up memories we’d rather leave behind.
And there’s not much support out there for veterans who deal with this. I’ve lived it, I’ve spoken loads of with others who face it too, and I’ve made it through the worst of it. That’s why I built this resource: simple tips, checklists, and signposts that might make the nights a little easier.
This isn’t treatment, and I won’t diagnose anyone.
If you’re struggling with PTSD, anxiety, depression or any other mental health issue, the best step is to speak to your GP. Tell them what’s been happening and how it’s affecting you.
That’s where proper medical support starts, and if you tell yourself there’s no point or it won’t work, you might be forgetting that there are hundreds of thousands of individuals who have trained for this and know a lot more than you or I do.
